AROMATHERAPY AND ESSENTIAL OIL (CLARY SAGE TREE/ CLARY SAGE OIL) CLARY SAGE TREE (Salvia sclarea)



Clary sage is a common name given to a large genus of about 900 species of plants; Clary sage belongs to the lamiaceae family of plants. It grows to about 1 meter tall; it has large leaves, with pink flowers.

Clary sage is a native of the Mediterranean region; it is now grown there, in central Asia, North Africa, United States and Western Europe.
LITTLLE HISTORY OF CLARY SAGE
The name Clary sage comes from a Latin word “claris” which means “clear”. Ancient scholars, like Theophrastus, diocorides and pliny included the therapeutic use of Clary sage in their writings. The Romans knew about clary sage and even gave it a name “oculus Christi” which means the eye of Christ, due to its eye cleaning ability.

CLARY SAGE ESSENTIAL OIL
Clary sage essential oil is extracted from Cary sage leaves; solvent extraction and steam distillation are used to extract Clary sage oil. Clary sage essential oil is pale yellow with a sweet fragrance. Its active components are:
·         Linalool
·         Sclareol
·         Monoterpenes
·         Tannins

The component sclareol gives Clary sage oil, its characteristic sweet fragrance, while the other components make it a therapeutic oil. Because it’s therapeutic and curative potency, Clary sage oil is very expensive.
