The lemon tree is a
small thorny evergreen citrus tree, from the Ruetaceace family of trees. Lemon trees are
cultivated throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world,
particularly in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and California. Lemons were first
brought from the Middle East to Spain and northern Africa in middle ages. It’s
difficult to point the origin of the lemon tree, but, many researchers believe
it’s a native of India or china.
The name lemon comes from an Arabic word “limun”
Lemon tree grows up to 20 feet tall and are
sparsely covered with foliage. It has oval leaves with white and sometimes pink
flowers. The flower has five sepals, five petals, numerous stamens, and a
solitary pistil.
The lemon has small pale yellow fruits, which
consist of eight to ten segments containing yellowish-white pointed seeds.
BRIEF HISTORY OF LEMON TREE
As stated above, the lemon tree was first
brought from the middle east to spain and northern Africa during middle ages.
Other records dating back to the 1st century B.C. show that,
crusaders transported lemon trees to other parts of the world for cultivation.
Lemon trees where also introduced to Egypt and Iraq at around 700 C.E.
LEMON OIL
Lemon essential oil is extracted from the peels
of the fruit through, steam distillation and cold pressing (cold pressing
produces more oil than steam distillation). Lemon oil is also known as Cedro
oil. It’s has a greenish-yellow color, with a sharp, fresh fragrance.
Over 200 pounds of lemon fruit peel is needed to
produce, just 1 pound of lemon oil. Compared to other essential oils, lemon oil
has a very short shelf life span, a maximum of 7-10 months.
Lemon oil is very effective aromatherapy oil.
USES OF LEMON OIL
Lemon oil is used to cure colds, coughs and flu,
it’s a remedy for exhaustion, and it helps treat viscose veins and other
infections. It’s used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, boils and acne. It helps
to reduce the acidity of the body
Lemon oil is also an ingredient in many cleaning
products, because of its antiseptic properties and fresh smell; it’s used as an
aerial disinfectant.
